Flag Day!!

Sue Loves Cherries had the greatest vintage poster on her blog today in celebration of flag day so I decided to chime in with some of our patriotic decor.

We fly these flags all summer until Labor Day. We love our flag and country in this house. It evokes all sorts of emotions in me and many others. During World War II, my father was on a ship that helped save some men when their ship was torpedoed. Among the survivors was a gravely injured sailor, who before dying, handed my father a small blood stained flag he had in his pocket. He told my father he wanted to pass something on to him before he died. He lived only a few minutes after this exchange.
I never knew this story until after my father died and going through his things I found this small, very worn and stained little flag. My mother then told me the story. I cried. Why hadn't my father ever shared this with us? I suspect it was very emotional for my father. He and others witnessed so much loss perhaps it was easier to just tuck it away and never bring it up again. I choose to think of it as a wonderful story of the sacrifices made by our soldiers.

The neighbors flying the start and stripes. Now there is still daylight so go fly your flags!

Old Toys

Aren't old toys the best? Made of quality materials and bright colors. I love to use them in display.

My husband's old Tonka trucks from when he was a boy give a ride to my little Mia doll.

They are still used by our littlest one but only in the house as we don't want them to get rusty out in the yard. I bet a toy from now would never last that many years.

This rough around the edges little sewing machine was picked up for a few dollars at an antique's store about twenty years ago.

This top is from the early 60s. My husband said it was always at his grandma's house when they were growing up. All the little ones used to and still do play with it but I have it in a tray of goodies when not in use.

Frugal Challenge - Planning for Christmas

About ten years ago I decided to start preparing for Christmas earlier in the year. With kids and working I was always exhausted and stressed by Christmas from all the work involved in preparing for the holiday. One of the biggest problems was not planning for the financial impact of Christmas. I would end of charging things when I ran out of money in December and paying all year long for a Christmas that had long passed. I started  to search for ways to plan financially for Christmas and to make sure I only paid cash for gifts and supplies.

Here are a few of the things I have done that have helped me to be a cash only Christmas shopper.

First, I have a Christmas account and this is nothing new. These have been around forever. I admit I do occasionally raid it for the kids birthdays so I know I cannot rely only on this account.

So the second thing I do is to pick up gifts as I see them through the year. This has really helped with minimizing the shopping I have to do in November and December. One key is to keep all those early gifts in one place and to keep track of them. I'll share a link to a great site to help keep track.

Thirdly, since we have lots of teens who love gift cards to buy for, I start in about June to buy a gift card about twice a month when I do my grocery shopping. The stores all sell so many different kinds I just keep purchasing them and marking them off my list. A little extra in the grocery budget saves so much come Christmas time. I just store them in my gift cupboard.

I also wanted to share a site with you that I have used for so many years now I can't remember when I started their holiday plan.

This site has all kinds of lists, ideas and ways to prepare for the holidays throughout the year. I now have my Christmas cards done in October and most of my gifts purchased and wrapped by Thanksgiving by following their plan.

They show you ways to bake and freeze ahead, how to start on your housecleaning systematically to be prepared by Christmas.

Now, I will tell you I do not do all of their suggestions but I just do what I can ahead to make life easier. Some years I do better than others but the reduction in stress alone and more free time in December is so worth starting ahead. I find I am cranky if I am stressed at the last minute and who wants to be cranky come Christmas. Check them out and see if you can find some hints that may help your holiday planning.

We're Goin' Camping

I truly am a simple gal and I absolutely love camping. My husband and I have been camping since we were dating. We started out in his dad's big heavy canvas tent and then bought a tent of our own when we were married. Around 13 years ago we were tent camping, me with my large round pregnant belly taking two little girls back and forth to the restroom, when I had finally had it with the tent side of camping. We upgraded to a pop up tent trailer and moved up to a travel trailer several years after. We have made some of our fondest memories camping and I am itching to get out there. I've been puttering and cleaning in preparation for our annual July 4th trip to the Central Coast.

I knew I saved all those old Scrabble tiles for a reason.

Made this to go above my little kitchen window. Now I adore my trailer. You may laugh but I do. It is my little second home that we take to lovely spots and just hang together as a family. Camping is just a wonderful  way to give kids a little slice of how it used to be. No electronics, though we do have a TV, but their electronics don't work usually. We unplug and the kids just get filthy and play all day. The way it should be. At night a bath or shower in the trailer, fresh clothes and a campfire awaits. Aah, I want to go NOW!

A little basket full of goodies on our table. I will share the rest later and give you a little tour of my little house on wheels.

First we will go here...

Then a weekend in August with friends up here...

In Sept we will be here...

And finally in October we will stay here...

Bzzzz-Bee Update

I was sitting on my patio ever aware of the bees resting in my nearby tree when all of sudden a buzzing sound so loud as to scare the heck out me, roared up and in a flurry so quick the bees flew off. The swarm was so big we could see it move up the street. I of course ran indoors but my husband watched them. I am glad we were patient and let them do their own thing. The bee population is in a decline and we need to protect them if we can help it. Very exciting. Now the lawn needs a quick mow to pick up as many of the dead ones as possible and then we can have our yard back. Yeah!!

Simple Sunday - Super Easy Chalkboard Labels

If you read my blog earlier this week you would know I was looking to really organize my laundry room surfaces. A place for everything and everything in it's place sort of thing so my counter top is not covered with junk all the time. I will reveal what I have done later but I wanted to make some cheap and easy chalkboard labels as one of my goals was to do as much of this project with things I have on hand. Here are a few labels I made. You'll never guess what I used for them.

Our recycle bin.

Lint waste can.

Mailbox

Now here is all the labels are made of. Painters tape and chalkboard paint.

Here is how I did it though. I just sprayed the exposed tape on the roll so it would still be good and sticky then when it dried I cut the size I needed and then just sprayed on some more paint to make another piece. What could be simpler or cheaper?

Weekend Update

Many have asked about how the potty training has been going and I am happy to say well. She is a stubborn cookie but thanks to those that said to just take the diapers away during the day, she caught on with only a couple of accidents in the beginning. But this whole thing has led me to a state of cabin fever. Having to stay home is lovely but having to stay home focused on potty training it not so much fun. You can't really just wander off and do projects, you have to remain focused on the task at hand.

So I puttered when I could and worked in my service porch in small doses.

Spent time in the yard but now we have a cluster of bees in our tree in the backyard which is very troublesome as I have a daughter who is allergic to bees. We have been locked inside since yesterday. I hope they move on on their own soon. My hollyhocks are in full bloom. Like paper flowers.

The first of the zinnias has bloomed. These pink ones reseed in my veggie garden every year. Welcome guests among the tomatoes.

Have You Tried This Stuff Yet?

I have to admit I am probably the last to try this stuff but I am Greek Yogurt's newest fan. I had it with berries and oatmeal sprinkled on top this morning. Normally yogurt is something I have to sort of choke down but this stuff is so yummy and smooth. The consistency is so creamy how could you not love it? My favorite is plain with honey. I buy it that way or sometimes add my own honey to the plain at home. If you haven't tried it yet you should.

Problem Area-Organizing the Laundry Room Surfaces

I know it isn't pretty but this is typically what happens each week to the counter top in my service porch as we call it or laundry room to the rest of the world. This is after a weekend of painting. Everyone, including me, has a habit of setting things down in here that need to be put away, taken to the garage or filed away. I set down papers and coupons, hubby household repair items and the kids are always setting the endless recyclables on the counter waiting for the daily trip out to the barrel. Here is my challenge. Get serious about using better containers, wall space and organization in this abused space. AND do it using what I already have if I can help it.
Oh and the cat food that has to be up high or the dogs will eat it. Nice huh?

Found some inspiration and ideas I like. Love the idea of using the space over the door for more storage. This is

Love the use of wall pockets here for paperwork.

Quiet Corner

I am in the trenches potty training this week. I was really feeling the need for a break and some quiet. An escape to my favorite corner of our garden was in order. Coffee and a new magazine in tow.

I can sit and enjoy the fountain.

I love the feeling of being tucked under the trees.

But best of all it is quiet with a view of  my garden.

Grandma's Baked Beans

Okay hands down these are the best baked beans I have ever had. My love affair with them started when I had them at BBQ with my then fiance's family. This is how his grandma doctored up canned beans to make yummy baked beans. So easy. I will eat these cold from the fridge for breakfast the next day.

This is for a large batch for company. Cut in half for just your family.
2- 28 oz. cans baked beans. I like Bushs or Gauchos
2 tbs spoon mustard (not dry) Mustard like French's
2 tbs molasses
1/4 c. brown sugar. I like the sweetness. Add less if you'd like.
1/4 c. onion in long slices
4 slices of bacon cut in one inch pieces (We use turkey but use what you prefer)

Pour beans in 9x13 pan, add all other ingredients except bacon and stir really well.
Lay pieces of bacon across top of beans and put in 350 degree oven for at least 1-11/2 hours. The top should look good and dark and caramelized.

Blogging Question #23889 Just Kidding!

Anyway, just a little levity. Onto the next question. A two parter:

1. Have you or do you plan to attend a blogging conference anytime soon?

2. If you have attended a blogging conference, please share with the rest of us the most important thing you learned at the conference.

My answer to this question is no I have not attended and don't have any immediate plans to attend a blogging conference. I was considering going to Blog Sugar as it was local for me but we have an annual family camping trip that weekend and the date was set and not changeable. Another reason I have not made any real plans is that I frankly don't want to spend the money on attending one just yet. I am not sure where I plan on going with blogging. For me it is a hobby so far and something that is stimulating and creative for me. Having said that, I may change my mind in the future as I would love to learn more of the techie end of maintaining my blog as well as how to actually use my camera for better blog shots. These are just personal goals of mine. Okay share, share your wisdom.

More Red and Green

My love affair with red and green seems pretty evident when I am looking through all my photos when I am loading them onto the blog. Thought I'd share some more lovelies today.

Funny I never realized I was always buying red and green rolling pins until I displayed them all together in this crock.

Sandbox Without Sand in the Pants

When my other kids were small we had the traditional sand box and you know what that would always lead to; sand in the pants, on your couch, on your carpet, floors EVERYWHERE.
I just didn't want to go that route with our youngest this time so I came up with what I think is my best mom idea to date and there aren't many. Took the weathered old wheel barrow at perfect toddler height and poured on bag of play sand in. Waa-Laa! It is perfect. She plays and no sand in the clothes so no sand to grind into my wood floors.

You can move it around into the shade or under cover if it rains. She has had the best time with it for two years now.

The wheel barrow is super steady too so it won't tip over. I just throw a cover on it at night if I remember so the kitties don't use it. Thankfully they have never discovered it.

The Potty Wars

Guess what we are doing? Potty training boot camp. Diapers off, panties on and no plans to go anywhere. Except when she is napping I will have to sneak out. Boy this kid is tough. A few hours have seemed like ten and I am already wiped. Breath, relax. Okay well the upside is I have a few new magazines I am pouring over and time to sit with my laptop while hanging with the kiddo. Wish us luck.

Frugal Challenge Update-Cheap or Free

Okay who is dying from these high gas prices? We are. (Hands Up) We are a three car family and the increase in gas prices here in CA is killing me. Had to have a little sit down with the college age daughter to enlighten her on the monthly fuel bill. It wasn't pretty. She helps some but it is still incredible, couple that with the hikes at the grocery store my mantra now has to be cheap for free.

Free: The view out my front window looking at my volunteer sunflowers.

Free: These will become free bird food in about a month and the little birds will spread them around the garden for next year.  I have not bought sunflower seeds in 10 years. They just reseed like crazy.

Cheap: Leftover scratch cornbread from last night's dinner covered in butter and honey makes a great breakfast.

Free: Some really great coffee snagged from Amazon.com. Zero out of pocket because I used gift cards from Swagbucks. It is some good stuff man.

Free: Rain watering my garden. What state do I live in? We don't get rain in So. Cal. in June. That is crazy but I will take the free watering for my yard.

Cheap: Banana raspberry bread made from old bananas from the freezer and some not too appetizing looking frosty raspberries that when rinsed really well, made a nice addition to the banana bread. I hate to throw any food away. If you have over ripe bananas, toss them in the freezer and just get them out about an hour before baking or toss them frozen in a smoothie.
