Oddities

While out in the garage unplugging our energy sucking refrigerator, this little oddity fell behind the fridge. I had never seen it before and it must have been tucked away sitting on top. Amazing it didn't break but was just wedged behind it when my hubby handed it to me all dusty. Gave it a spin in the dishwasher and it came out all clean. Now isn't this just the funniest little piece? A price tag inside said $2.49. Should I keep it? Is it too hideous or would it look good in my retro aqua kitchen makeover?

Want to know or maybe you won't want to know something odd about me? I like my pancakes under done. You know, a little batter still oozing out when I cut into them. I know my kids say it is gross but what is not to love about gooey batter? Like cookie dough. Why does it always taste better than the actual cookies.

Frugal Challenge-Lowering Your Electric Bill

Electricity here in Southern California aint' cheap!! To cool our home in the summer is very expensive. We decided to have one of the free energy audits of our home and here is what we learned. I want to share in case it can help any of you lower your electric bill.

Our bedroom is really warm. The one room in the house that doesn't seem to cool down. Afternoon sun all day, beating down on it, just warms it up. Of course a huge tree would help, and that will be planted in the fall, but the audit suggested an awning. To Amazon I went, and found one I thought was nice looking but reasonably priced. Also, I had 10 bucks in Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks so instant discount. Hubby installed it, and my gosh what a difference it did make. Without sun on that window, our room did not heat up like it normally does. We could leave the shutters open and let the afternoon breeze in.

We love the results so much we are going to put them along the entire back of the house.

As part of the audit they let you know what are real energy suckers and our garage freezer was high on the list. She said next to a pool motor, which we don't have, keeping a refrigerator cold in the summer in a hot garage is a huge draw of power, so we ate through what was in there and I cleaned out my house fridge and
made room for what needed to come in the house. For the summer months I will not stockpile any meat. I would rather be cooler and run my air more than have an extra roast in the garage.
Now, I do not have a large fridge, so I have to be organized. We have two refrigerators and we keep waiting for one of them to die before we get a new one for the house. The waiting continues.

I know it looks empty. Was on my way to the store.

Another thing she said was an energy waster in the summer, and I was very surprised to hear this, were fans. Now, we always would leave ceiling fans and other fans running all day and she said that to only run them when you are in the room. Fans do not lower the temperature of the room but make you feel cooler with the breeze, so to switch them off when you leave a room.

Also, all those nasty video game consoles and chargers should be placed on a strip and turned off when not in use. I am on my girls about this all the time. The older girls' room has 50 things plugged in in there. I will be checking to see they are turned off.

I will see how our bill is next month after these changes and will give you an update.

Happy Sunday!

Happy Sunday everyone. Not going to fight the warmer temps today, so I am taking the little one for a dip in the in-laws pool. Everyone else is busy, so just going to splash around for a couple of hours and wear out a little one. Hope you all have a fine summer day.

Where There's a Grill, There's a Way

I hate to turn on my oven in the summer and I try to use my cook top sparingly. We grill several times a week and I wanted to use up some green beans I had bought and a zucchini from the garden. I thought why not, I grill other veggies.

Just made a foil packet by placing two long pieces of foil to make a T. Then I take whatever veggies, toss in some fresh chives, salt and pepper and coat with a little olive oil. Fold up the foil packet and put on the grill with your meat.

The veggies steam wonderfully in their packet and the house stays cooler. Just open and serve.

Salsa Anyone?

Did the windows on one more side of the house today and boy you'd think I was sending the kids to the firing line. One child who is actually 20 said, "Mom you pick the most absurd projects." I told her that cleaning the windows and screens once a year was not absurd. I also reminded them that they slept in five hours later than their father's time to get up for work so to quit complaining and get working.

Okay on from the complaining about my teens. After the windows I picked all these tomatoes so if you think you need a large plot to have a garden, you don't here is the size of my tiny suburban garden from a previous post.

I think a big batch of salsa is on the menu this weekend to enjoy with some grilled fish tacos.

Put the rest of the blue glass jars in the kitchen. These were probably originally in the kitchen here as we found them in the cupboards when we moved in. So now they are home.

Happy Weekend Everyone!

Small Town Soaps

Ginger at Small Town USA asked for suggestions to name her handmade soaps and guess who's idea she chose? Mine. I just immediately thought why not "Small Town Soaps". Now, I am not normally clever so this may be the last time I come up with a catchy name but the best part is she sent me some soap to enjoy.

Too cute all in pink and green.

There it is looking fab in my soap dish. My girls and I all had to try it as soon as I put it out. They were like,"You can make your own soap?" Too funny. As if soap can only come from Walmart or something.

It is wonderful. Thank you Ginger!!

For All Us Bakers

On Pinterest found some great Pins. Isn't this necklace the cutest ever? From Etsy.

I NEED this aqua vintage mixer.... From Shabby Vintage Home.

And just too adorable. These Hello Kitty Macaroons from I Heart Baking.
I want to make her cupcakes for my daughter's birthday. But seriously do I think they will actually resemble Hello Kitty?

Window Washing Day

I am a little behind on my yearly window washing routine. Now I clean my windows more than once a year but annually we go through all the windows and hose the house down and take off the screens and scrub them and then do the windows up all clean and shiny. I don't love this chore so I break it up into four days.

Each morning the girls and I do a side of the house. One daughter does the screens with Softscrub and scrub brush and one does the inside of the windows while I do the hosing down and the cleaning of the outside. For cleaning the windows the most economical way is to use vinegar and water and old towels and rags. Costs next to nothing to clean them this way. Just some time and sweat.

Hello Girls!

Years ago my kids started buying me these little wired hair dolls. I sometimes wondered why they chose these little gals for me. Was it because I have sort of curly hair too and I look all crazed at times around the house?

I am not sure. They have never told me exactly why they kept buying me these little cuties but I love them.

They decorate a way up high space that needed something. They all look down on me and make me smile.

Mid Summer Tomatoes

I have tomatoes coming out of my ears. I am glad to share with family and friends but they are ever so lovely to display in a bowl.

I pulled out a new table topper and tried it with a bowl of maters in the kitchen but it just clashed with some of my things in here now.

So I moved the table cloth and maters to the dining room. They really go with my red chairs.

I think this table vignette will carry me through the end of summer.

Okay, I promise to embrace summer heat and all. I will head to my inlaws pool. Thank goodness they live very close to us.

Happy Summer!!

Texas Trash

Have you ever had Texas trash? It is so yummy. Some friends of ours, transplants from Texas, brought it on a camping trip my daughter went on and she came home and told me how great it was. The perfect mix of sweet and salty.

The recipe will be sketchy as they just told my girl what was in it and I just always pour the ingredients in a pan and then add the melted chips.

Here is a guess of the approximate amounts:

2 cups Chex Rice Cereal
2 cups of pretzel sticks
2 cups of salted peanuts
2 cups of either Cheerios or Rice Krispies. (I use whatever I have on hand)
2 cups of white chocolate chips

Mix the first four ingredients in a 9x13 cake pan. Melt the white chips and pour over the dry ingredients. Mix quickly to coat. Let cool and then break up and enjoy.

The variations on this are endless. You could use chocolate chips instead or add M&M's. The minis are great for this. I used red white and blue ones one year for the Fourth of July.

Colorful and Powerful

I just heard a politician on TV say that a certain segment of the population wants to put women back in the kitchen pregnant and in the home and that they are afraid of strong women. Well, I don't know about you, but I was never as powerful a woman as when I was carrying a baby in me with hormones raging. God help the man that would get in my way. Isn't this conversation over yet? A woman at home carrying a life in her is as powerful thing you could ever do. To create a life is the most moving thing I have ever done at home or a working mom. That is why women do this and men should make no comments about whether that makes a strong woman or not.

My choice to be committed to my family is not always the easiest choice. You don't think there are days I want to get in my car and drive away from this house? Sure there are, but I make the choice to be here. I didn't get to stay home full time for 18 years of my marriage and now I thankfully do.

The choice to come home was difficult and sacrifices have been made. Don't tell me I am not powerful for being in the home. Oh no he didn't!!

Sorry off my soapbox!! Okay breathe.

Don't you just love the color of crayons spilled in a box. Love it!

Loved the colors of the little one's painting. We hung it in the window to enjoy how pretty it was. She was very proud to see it hanging in the kitchen window.

Rushing Things

I have to admit I am not a summer gal. Once you get past the Fourth of July I see no reason to continue with summer. I wilt in the heat. Love the fun of summer but not the temps.

My kids of course love the out doors and carefree summer fun.

But it is time to take the flags down until next year.

I know I am rushing things, but I am already thinking of Fall. My most FAVORITE time of year.
I will hold off as it is way to early to drag these puppies out, but I am dreaming of the cooler weather and my favorite shop's Autumn open house in August. I don't need anymore Fall decor in this house, but I can't help myself. I have to pick up something each year.

Baby It's Hot Outside

Actually today is wonderful and cooler. Only in the low 80s and nice cool breeze. I am LOVING it!!
But when I took the pics for this post it was so dang hot. I am not a gal that likes to be hot. Thank goodness for A/C!!!!

The sun has been beating down on my poor garden.

I have given up and emptied lots of the pots that did not survive my vacation away from them with triple digit temps here.

The Lantana are thriving though and the butterflies love them.

The bees don't mind the heat either though this one never leaves the yard rain or shine.

Even the birds were hiding from the heat trying to stay cool.

It's as if the ferns don't even want to unfurl.

The tropicals are happy with the heat and are putting on a nice show.

Coleus are happy as long as they are in the shade and kept watered.

Blueberry Sunday and What to Do With Those Over-Ripe Berries

What to do when you have a large amount of over ripe blueberries that no one wants to eat any longer?

Well, first you whip up some blueberry muffin batter for breakfast.

And if you have a three year old helping you use Elmo liners.

Then you freeze the rest. Works great if you wash them and dry completely. Spread them out on a cookie sheet and freeze. Great to pop in the mouth frozen, use in smoothies or on yogurt and of course for blueberry muffins or pancakes.
