Every once in a while I will notice my kitchen drain needs a freshening up. You know the smell.
I used to use bleach but my daughter is very sensitive to it permeating the house so I discovered a more natural approach years ago.
Take some baking soda and white vinegar.
Generously sprinkle the baking soda around and in the drain. About a 1/4 cup.
Then pour about a cup of vinegar over the baking soda and watch it fizz. You will hear it fizzing all down the drain. Let sit for about fifteen minutes.
And wash it all down with a pot of boiling water.
We are on a sewer system so I wonder if this is better than bleach if you have a septic tank. Seems like it would be. Helps keep the drain nice and clear too.

I like that way too.Good to remember :)
We are septic. Thanks for the tip!!
Funny you post this today. I was doing the dishes this morning and I noticed that smell. I'm heading downstairs to do this. Cannot stand that smell. Thanks for the tip.
Sometimes those "old" remedies are the best. Do you know that this is also the natural cure for people that have gout or inflammatory issues..except you have to use organic apple cider vinegar and add cold water...lol...what you don't drink you can use to flush your pipes! xo Diana
this is my way too,
Hello Elaine,
Of course baking soda is better than bleach for this task. I am very allergic to it too!

You discovering all these great cleaning ideas make make job so much easier. Thanks.
blessings.
This is my mom's remedy for everything. She made me wash the walls (we had paneling) with it in my first house. It works!
I love using baking soda...This stuff is great for lots of things..
thanks for sharing.
I truly needed to see this post today...we have been having some drain issues. Thank you so much.
this works..I do it!!
Baking soda and vinegar are inexpensive and home based cleansers we used at home too. I agree that both works even in our home.
Oh I use this too!
and another thing. I can't remember if you make your own laundry soap or not... but I use a scoop of that to swish my toilet clean too! Instead of comet or bleach.
It sparkles!

I also do this~ Peroxide works in place of vinegar if you have an expired bottle!
Oops, reminds me that I should do this soon. And yes, it's much better for septic systems.
This is a great tip, Elaine! Thanks for posting it!

Thanks so much for this tip! I desparately need to do this. Love your blog!
Excellent idea. We have a septic system at the lake, so I'm glad you mentioned that we can use it with a septic system. Thanks!
Good ole vinegar and baking soda. Age old remedies for many things. Thanks for sharing :o)

That's a great idea and I am on septic. Thanks!
This is really good and easy. OH, and I have both ingredients in my kitchen, so I'll give this a try :) :) We don't have a septic tank... Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)
Great tip! Thanks. I know what I'll be doing this morning when I clean the kitchen.
