Dining Room Spruce Up

We have been busy busy trying to get some unfinished projects done. The dining room has been our main focus for now. We had popcorn ceilings plastered over, molding put up and finally now painted. We took down the crummy looking cabinets hanging on both sides of the china hutch. I said lets just hang plates and boy does that give it a cleaner finished look. We have an odd dining room in the center of our home because of an addition. It has six doorways and little wall space. It is nice and big so I love that for entertaining.

Of course the mister had to decorate the top of the cabinet while I was at the store. I approve.

Fresh paint just makes a room feel so much nicer. Nothing like it for a sprucing up.

We still have a mish mash of furniture and a table we would like to replace but for now it will stay. You can see I don't have much wall space.

My thrift store red chairs are still needed. We bought four new black Windsors last year but need to get four more. Not sure when that will happen. Always more want than money it seems.

On my dream list a large harvest table and open shelved hutch. Much less formal than the ones I was given by my mother when she redecorated. I am so much more relaxed and like simpler less fussy furniture but I was thankful to have them and have used them for many years.

It only took us over a year to get all the crown molding painted. Anyone else on the slow track of home improvement like us? We are paying for it today. Both of us saying ooh and ouch when we are walking around the house.

Sunny Simple Sunday

Happy Weekend! We are painting and cleaning and getting ready to host a birthday gathering for my sister in law. It is cooler here and we are loving it. Fall is finally here.
Now for some highlights from last week.

Two Birdies and a B. shared the story of how some of her friends achieved their dream of moving to the country. I share that dream. I could move right in. The little farm is complete with chickens too.

Priscilla showed us her Halloween decor with her pretty mantel but I loved this idea. You know how over the years you accumulate those Halloween signs and maybe you don't know how to display them. You could do like she did and hang them up the banister fixed to an autumn garland. Great idea!

Julies Little House showed her pretty glowing all white autumn vignette. I love that you can celebrate fall and if orange isn't your thing you can still decorate for the season.

Now link up and have a Simply Wonderful Sunday!! Thanks everyone for coming by.

Favorite Things

It's homecoming weekend around here. We went to the game last night.

Gotta love the kilts some of the band members wear. We are the Tartans so lots of red plaid. How did they know that was a favorite of mine.

We left in the third quarter but we were winning 36-0 so I think it was safe to say we won.

My girls waiting for me on a Saturday morning. It is safe to say they are spoiled. "Grapes please mom."

Oh yeah, and if that ain't sexy what is? Your man finishing home projects. Oh yes it is going to be a good day.
My daughter and I are off for pedis before she goes to the homecoming dance tonight. Another favorite as she has two older sisters and she is wearing a dress her sister wore so no cost there. She is only a freshman so there are plenty of dances and dresses to buy in the future.

Wonky Little Halloween Village 2012

Our Wonky Little Village was moved to the den this year.

It is really just a mish mash of things picked up over the years.

I guess I should show it at night all aglow but this way you can see the spooky village lit up.

Love these vintage looking Halloween trees I bought last year at Country General Store.

Little witch flies on her broomstick.

This is one of my girls favorite scenes for Halloween. She always looks to see where we set it up for the season.

You can see the village for 2011 here.

If you live in the area Country General Store is having their Christmas open house this Friday and Saturday.
I will be there sometime Friday morning so if you see me there say hi.

Garden Stroll

Every year my old dahlia comes back. This year is it rambled right up the obelisk I placed there for the pumpkin vine.

The morning glories, little brats of the garden, of course just climbed right on top.
One more ripening pumpkin.

My basil is bursting so I brought some in for a pasta dinner and as always two fresh eggs. The chickens have continued to lay daily. The heat maybe has fooled them into thinking it is not fall. Or maybe it is all the spoiling and they are just saying thank you.

We picked another cinderella pumpkin. I am so proud of it. They are so expensive to buy and I have successfully grown three this year.

Back to School Organization

I think I may finally have my back to school legs under me. Most of you know this year was a big change for me with my first in public school and my first pre-schooler. The living in my car driving to and from has been an adjustment. My second daughter is about to get her license and that will help a lot. Four drivers, four cars with me only having to drive two kids around. Are you confused, cause I am?
You all gave me great advice. Color coding for different kids and preparing what you can the night before.
One thing I decided to do was use the side of our fridge for all the visual reminders I needed to keep organized. Schedules, upcoming important dates all there for me to find at a quick glance.
I keep running lists there as well for the stores I shop at.

Packing lunches the night before helps as well. I have found the little bagged snacks to be quick to grab if I can find them on sale. When lunch boxes come home they get emptied first thing and wiped out. On Fridays I wipe them all out with rubbing alcohol which I use everywhere and you can read about it here.  Having a space on one of my kitchen shelves to store all lunch box supplies has been one of the best things I have done.

I write notes to myself all the time. Do you do that? I make lunches right here and put notes in the kids boxes as well.

Easy dinners or dinners from the freezer are a must for our two busiest nights. Tonight is BLTs and potato salad I made yesterday.

Well off to clean the kitchen before I pick up kid #1.

Autumn's Cozy Corners

Every year we change up our fall decor a bit. It think this is my favorite little scene ala the lineman. I said honey you should sit and rest and he said this is resting for me.

My daughter had been gone all day Sunday and when she came in she remarked how her favorite times of the year are when we are decorating the house for holidays. I guess that makes all the work worth it.

I spent all day sanding, taping and painting trim and crown molding. I actually have one room all finished and painted. That only took a few years. It felt so good to see it all fresh and done.

I guess it is good to do these projects because everything came down and was dusted and cleaned and re-hung.

The floor was a shade of grey under the heavy piano. I cleaned it with Murphy's Oil Soap. I love the smell of that stuff. All clean and fresh. I am tired today and will indulge in a nap I think.
Next onto the dining room where four doors and loads of trim all have to be prepped and painted.
Give me a few months. I am a slow worker.

Sunny Simple Sunday

It's that time. What are you all up to this weekend? We are in for another scorcher but I am not going to complain, at least out loud. I will enjoy the summer like temps and let my little one play in her pool a few more days. She just came running in all drippy and chilled. Now she has the right idea. Now onto the features:

Rachel's Junk in the Trunk showed the many uses of tule. From ghosts to tutus, even for adults. We have a shared love for tule. Maybe because I had an enormous tule skirt on my prom dress in high school. As with all things 80s, I had a very big and fluffy but gorgeous dress. I should find pictures.

It's All Connected drew us all in with her gorgeous fall front porch. Hay bales and pumpkins oh my. This is so inviting and just welcomes you in for a cup of hot cocoa and some pumpkin pie.

Okay, and does anyone decorate for the holidays like Debbie? Debbie Dabble shared the most darling little red and white kitchen hutch. She proves you can mix orange and red. I asked that question this week for my own kitchen.

And the most viewed was A Sentimental Life with a sweet story about her family's ties to a house that has been in their family a very long time. It choked me up when I read it as saying goodbye to my parent's house after they passed was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I now live in my husband's grandparent's home. My husband has been coming to this house since he was born. I totally get this post and love how she is the glue in the family. Every family has one. You know what I am talking about.

Okay link up and have a Simply wonderful Sunday.

Fall Prims Plain and Simple

I really did manage to thin out some of the fall decorations this year and kept just what I loved. I thought these ceramic pumpkins in the same hue as the crocks just belonged together.

My lineman did most of the decorating. He waits till I go outside with the chickens or something and then keeps re-arranging things.

Then if I don't really like the way he did something, I wait until he goes to work and tweak it if I think it needs changes.

But the best decorating for fall this year is this awesome pumpkin that I GREW MYSELF. Yes, on my gardening bucket list for many years and now I have succeeded in growing a few pumpkins in my city yard. Ain't she a beaut??
I believe it is a Cinderella pumpkin. I have to find the seed packet. I have several more that are still getting the orange color in the garden. Hope to  pick them soon.

Sunny Simple Sunday will be up this afternoon so come back and link up what you have been up to.

Pancakes for Dinner

Whenever my husband travels for work, the girls and I have pancakes for dinner one of the nights. Carb heaven! A certain someone was caught sneaking licks out of the batter bowl.

There is just something about the smell of doughy pancakes sizzling in a hot buttered pan.

Look at those fluffy beauties. Here is my secret to the fluffiest pancakes ever.
